Gary Ripsley - 'Grippsly'

Gary Ripsley, more commonly known as 'Grippsly', was a leader of the Grippsly Gang, who disappeared for seven years after a voyage to find his fortunes. He has returned to Enaeth with no recollections of this voyage or how he gained his Augury. He is now a member of Second Sunrise and in eternal service to his beholder, 'her'.

Description

Grippsly in an unassuming male halfling, with balding dark brown hair, a thick muttonchop beard and horseshoe mustache. Dressed in a fanciful parody of a sailors outfit, Grippsly has a body like an acrobat, built for balance and flexibility developed from a young age working on sailing vessels.

Grippsly has a pronounced and over-the-top demeanor, which few find charming but many find disarming. He uses this to great advantage, able to talk himself out of any given situation, often times bad.

Since being resurrected, Grippsly now has the last image of his previous life burnt into his retinas; whenever he closes his eyes, he sees a faded image of the White Dama looking into his eyes.

History

Grippsly’s childhood was an unfortunate series of devastating events. When his home of Kerebrihn was sacked by the Violate King, he was forced to flee with the mass of refugees attempting to brave 'The Crossroads'; a forboding no-mans land of horrors. In deep orange fog, Grippsly witnessed men and women torn apart by fast moving shapes cutting through the dense mist. Grippsly survived, but his parents did not.

The surviving refugees made it to Voltaine, where hastily contracted camps were erected. The conditions in the camps were abhorrent, and like many of the children from the orphanage, Grippsly dreamt of a better life. The children roved the camps in gangs, stealing food, causing mischief, and occasionally, sneaking into the city itself to steal exotic goods. Grippsly fell in with a crowd of misfits, and due to his affable nature, swiftly became the leader of 'Grippsly's Gang', despite the opposition of his then rival and later friend, a bossy know-it-all girl named Elimarah.

Their deeds grew as they did, culminating in the infiltration and disruption of a Barony wedding. Grippsly became a legendary figure among the children, when he 'bluffed' his way out of an encounter with Herald Rohktar himself during this wedding.

As they grew into young adulthood, many of his friends took up jobs, and the gang slowly splintered apart. Grippsly, who had been working on a fishing boat for a number of years now, began to consider a life on the waves, where he felt true thrill in the spray of the sea, away from the land and all of its problems.

Using what little he had saved, he began to build a boat in secret, using what he learnt and whatever improvised tools he had on hand to build it. After a year of constant work, the boat was ready, with just enough room for two.

Grippsly made an offer to Elimarah, the only one of his friends he still stuck by; to join him on a voyage to Torrens, from which they could do anything or travel anywhere. Elimarah refused Grippsly’s almost intoxicating fervour, stating a boat so small would not fit both of them or survive the waves. Grippsly told her to wait until morning to change her mind. In the breaking of dawn however, Elimarah did not appear. Heartbroken, he set off alone to find his fortune. Despite the ramshackle nature of his boat, it was sturdy and well built, and over three weeks crested the waves towards Torrens. On approach, Grippsly fancied he could see the Cylinder Tower of Torrens just below the Litany.

This was his last memory.

Grippsly awoke on land; his boat nowhere to be seen, washed up in the exact place he had left from. Only, he had changed; his mind filled with a hole he couldn’t make sense of. He drew a crowd of amazed locals, all had assumed he long since died or found his fortune. Surreptitious questioning shocked Grippsly; seven years had passed since he left. He learnt Elimarah had become a Herald not long after he sailed away, turning the refugee camps into a functioning township, and had since left for Torrens to assist with the Merse there.

Wasting no time, Grippsly left Voltaine in his shadow to find his fortune at Torrens, and risk the travel through the wilderness alone. The once foreboding environs that scared Grippsly as a child did not frighten him anymore; strange new powers had worked into his bones; powers he hoped would help him find favour, fortune, and eventually, Elimarah.
